526 city buses will ply in 13 urban areas including Darbhanga of the state .Urban Development and Housing Department has given a green nod for the purchase of the buses .The government will spend about Rs 27 lakhs per bus .The buses will be purchased under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) .Purchase of buses will be in two phase . 227 buses will be purchased in the first phase .
The government has handed over the responsibility of purchasing bus to Bihar Urban Development of Infrastructure Construction Ltd (WUDCO ) . While the responsibility of operational of buses will be handed over to Bihar State Road Transport Corporation . Currently , 141 buses are running in different towns including Patna , Muzaffarpur , Darbhanga , Gaya and Chhapra under the scheme of JNNURM . There are also five special buses running for women in Patna .
The buses will run in the range of 50 KM around the respective city . The government is trying to provide better public transport to the passengers of villages to going and coming to the city .
The fare of city buses will also be lower than private buses , the fare however, has not been fixed yet . In the initial phase, the government will operate city buses free for Sikhs devotees under ring bus service in different routes of Patna from December 25 to January 5 on the occasion of Prakash Utsav(Light festival) .
