The government of Bihar has decided to set-up AIIMS in Darbhanga. The proposal was pending since last 2 years when Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced for making another AIIMS in Bihar. The city, in this way, will have the honor to have the second AIIMS in Bihar.
Recently, the chief secretary of Bihar Government held a meeting with the Department of Health. In this meeting, it was decided to send a proposal to Government of India for making of AIIMS in Darbhanga. After the consent of the Central Government, the constructions for the new AIIMS will begin.
Why Darbhanga got AIIMS?
The government has selected Darbhanga as the venue for second AIIMS in Bihar due to its proximity to North Bihar and Nepal. The city got the advantage of fore-lane highways, rail network and soon to start commercial air service. In case of an emergency, an air-ambulance can well take off using its airstrip.
DMCH to be Upgraded to make AIIMS in Darbhanga
There is a proposal that the existing Darbhanga Medical College and Hostel (DMCH) be upgraded to the status of AIIMS for this purpose. This is because DMCH has got more than sufficient amount of land that Central Government has set as the minimum standard for AIIMS construction.
As per the government, AIIMS requires 200 Acres of land while DMCH already possesses 240 Acres and Government will not need to acquire land from any third party. The land-related report by the District Magistrate of Darbhanga also quotes 257 acres land with DMCH. So, even DMCH provides 200 Acres of the required land for AIIMS, 57 Acres will still be left for its own purpose.
The DMCH requires only 20 acres of land which is again 37 acres more than the determined standard. The existing hospital has buildings at 56 places while the rest area is empty. Under this scenario, It has been claimed that after a handover of the prescribed land, DMCH operations will not suffer.
New Setup and Recruitments
The takeover of the buildings and lands of DMCH for AIIMS in Darbhanga may also see a transfer of existing 97 doctors, 347 paramedical staff to other medical colleges of Bihar. The doctors and staffs in the upcoming AIIMS hospital in Darbhanga will be recruited in the same manner as recruited by AIIMS in Delhi.
The existing hospital in Darbhanga is regarded among the bigger hospitals in Bihar and construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga can relieve people of Mithilanchal and a large part of Nepal to go to Delhi, some 1400 km away.
There is currently, no Central Government operated the hospital for the densely populated North Bihar region. Not to forget, the high standard health facility of AIIMS in DMCH will be very beneficial for a large number of patients in North Bihar
