Finally, some good news for air-passengers to Darbhanga this Diwali!

The flight services will begin from Nov 8, 2020. According to latest reports, the flight operator – Spicejet, has started bookings from its official website (https://book.spicejet.com/), for Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. The passengers can also book tickets through makemytrip (visit) and goibibo (visit) like travel websites.

Ticket Price and Flights

The fare prices for flights start for Rs 3,799 ( New Delhi – Darbhanga) and Rs 3,826 ( Mumbai and Bangalore). Earlier, the fare set for all 3 destinations has been Rs 3470. Spicejet is operating flights on all 7 days of the week.

The Spicejet will fly its Boing-737 type aircraft for Darbhanga flight services which have a maximum capacity of 162-189 passengers. Flight time for Delhi from Darbhanga will be 1:45 minutes while for Mumbai and Bangalore, the duration will be 2:30 minutes.

There are six flights ( Up-Down ) from Darbhanga Airport daily for Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore.

Spicejet will fly two flights from and to Mumbai. The flight for Mumbai from Darbhanga will fly at 12:40 in the afternoon. Likewise, from Mumbai, the flight for Darbhanga can be boarded at 09:40 AM in the morning.

Delays and Criticism

Recently, Mr Hardeep Puri – the minister of Civil Aviation had made an inspection to the Darbhanga Airport and had assured about the opening of the airport soon.

Airport is developed under UDAN scheme

The Airport which is almost ready and in the final stages of its operation is constructed under the UDAN scheme of regional air connectivity by the Government of India.

The Centre under this scheme asks the States to provide minimum land, free of cost, for development of the RCS airports.Indian government will compensate for the loss with a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of about Rs. 3,000 per seat and States will have to bear 20% towards VGF.

In the tender floated by Government of India 2 low-cost flight operators named IndiGo and SpiceJet airlines had shown interests in flight operations from Darbhanga airport.

Criticisms due to postponment and delays

The delays in the start of flight had earned a lot of criticism from the people of the region and the government was under pressure to meet the regional aspirations.

The state goverment was also interested in the opening of the airport which is expected to open a plethora of new opportunities to the region. The chief minister of Bihar, Mr Nitish Kumar had also requested the Government of India to expedite the completion of the airport.

Longest Airport in Bihar

Darbhanga Airport (IATA: DBR, ICAO: VE89) is the first private aviation airport in India. It happens to be the third biggest runway airport in Bihar. The airport was used as a private airport by the Maharaja of Darbhanga. Started in 1950 as King Kameshwar Singh Private Indian airlines, the king had a fleet of three personal aircraft.

Runway suitable for Boing Aircrafts

Darbhanga airport has a runway length of over 9,000 feet which is considered suitable for Boing type aircraft.

A large portion of the airport is being currently used as an air force base station from where fighter and other military aircraft take off.

The airport development project is monitored by Regional Connectivity Scheme ‘UDAN’ of the Government of India.
